A List for Grandma...

April 07, 2009

Tuesdays have recently become reflective days for me.  I’ve mentioned that I recently lost my grandma.  Each step of the way, Tuesdays seemed to be milestone days for her, so each Tuesday I continue to think of her.  Growing up with Grandma, you’d think I’d have inherited her all-encompassing LOVE for cats (or at least have learned it by osmosis!)  We had as many as 9 cats at one point!Sorry to say that you wouldn’t exactly describe me as an animal lover, but here’s my tribute nonetheless… in memory of Dusty, Tippy, Bugger, and Simon and of course, Grandma.

Best places in Cincy honoring cats:

1.      Save the Animals Foundation:  My mom chose this non profit, no-kill shelter as the organization to be benefitted in memory of my grandma, in lieu of flowers and the like.  Check it out.

2.     The Cincinnati Zoo:  Of course, you can visit the zoo and enjoy a variety of cats.  There are many programs to draw awareness to different cats, the cheetah in particular.  Find the Angel Fund information and decide if your child would be interested in getting involved and learning more.

3.     Thought about adopting a cat?  They really do make low-maintenance pets.  Try a simple search and you’ll turn up a variety of local cat shelters ready and willing to help you!  I have family that have had several really great experiences with the SPCA.  (We got our black lab from a rescue and we couldn’t be happier!)

4.     The Scratching Post in Deer Park just built a new building for their cats.  I also like their online roster of possible adoptees.  Do you have a vet or pet store you’d like to brag about?  Let’s hear it!If adopting a cat is not in your future, consider donating to a local charity that helps animals.  It’s a great way to teach your child about charity.  More about that next Tuesday!

Getting Outdoors; Springtime in Cincy

March 17, 2009

With the weather improving, do you find yourself anxious to get outdoors?  Try these fun spots for outdoor fun and a bonus:  animals!  Local petting zoos, farms and farmer's markets can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors.  Try these:

Gorman Heritage Farm - in the heart of the city, this working farm has great experience to offer.  Enjoy the guitar with Mr. Mike and get close to the animals in the spring. You can go on a tour, or go on your own.

Children's  zoo at the Cincinnati Zoo - Enjoy a variety of animals your children can pet at the Frisch's' Discovery Program and feed the goats.

Sunrock Farm - While Sunrock Farm is getting a bit expensive, they are generous with their time as far as getting near the animals and really enjoying them.  Farmer Frank can even allow your child to milk a goat!

Shaw farm - Shaw Farm has a lot to offer, particularly in the fall.  Somewhat more reasonably priced, this is a nice look at nature, but you can't get too close to the animals...

Winton woods - Horse Camp...  this comes well recommended!  It sounds like a blast to interest those budding veterinarians!

Findlay market - Lots of fun for those who love unique fresh food.

Whole Foods markets in Deerfield Township has a ton of kid-friendly classes.  Call 398-9358 for details!

Other areas you'd like to add to the list?  I'd love to hear it!
