The Creative Reflection

January 13, 2009

Here in Cincy, where is the best place to see your child's reflection?  The pond in Eden Park?  The dress up mirror at Totter's Otterville?  Your very own compact mirror?

Speaking of reflections as we did yesterday, instead of trying to find the closest mirror or even the closest body of water (could you really see anything in the Ohio River?!), imagine  the power you have with just your simple pictures.  The power of storytelling is in your hands!  You're probably wondering what to do with all those pictures anyway.  If you are organized and scrapbooking or some such thing, then good for you!  What better way for your child to see his or her reflection than to simply look at pictures.   If you're not an avid scrapbooker (or even close) no worries!  Just grab a quick plastic picture holder at your local drug store and stick in some snapshots.  If you want to really be fancy-schmancy, put in a few captions or people's names for the beginning readers in your family (and they're all beginning readers).  Use a few pictures of family, pictures of events or vacations.  Viewing and reviewing these treasured pictures creates stories.  Pictures tell stories about what your family enjoys.  Pictures tell stories of christenings, days at the park and special times.  Pictures actually reflect back to you and your child what is important to your family.  If you're really crafty, you can take pictures of relevant objects that begin with different letters or have a different number of objects in each picture:  Perhaps A for Abby, 4 legs on your dog and the like.  Then, when you're waiting for the doctor, waiting for the bus, sitting in the car, you have your very own reflection of your lives.  What better story could there be?

See you Thursday for some terrific ideas to actually organize those photos and all those papers from scribbles to sculptures!
